HERE IS OUR FULL UNEDITED REVIEW OF CINDERELLA
Director: Leah Volke
Just when you thought Christmas was a distant memory, up pop the Rochford District Players with Cinderella to take you right back to the tinsel and the crackers; and this pantomime was a real cracker!
This was the essence of community theatre with lots of people of all abilities and all ages, on a brightly lit stage performing with gusto and obvious enjoyment.
There were sensitive performances by Rebecca Shaw as Cinders and Leah Volke as Prince Charming which also had an eye on the comedy. Just a little more gusto with the thigh slapping please! Darren Kent as Buttons was lively and amusing and displayed a pleasant singing voice in the Grease number. The rest of the principals, as well as the chorus, were very supportive and always engaged. Just be careful with diction. Some amusing lines were occasionally lost when doing a funny voice or the delivery was a little too fast.
Simon Uskuri and Travis Nicholls were the stand-out performers as the sisters, always drawing the eye when on stage, although they were very ugly!! The ‘Bet you wish your girlfriend was hot like me’ music on their exit was a stroke of genius.
Clearly enjoyed by the whole audience, this was a solid, funny and well constructed pantomime. If there was a difficulty with changing directors mid rehearsal, it didn’t show. All the essential ingredients were there, supported by good costumes, lighting and sound. I look forward to the next one.
